Riding a Motorcycle in Hot Weather: How to Stay Cool, Safe and Focused

There is a lot to enjoy about riding in warm weather: dry roads, long evenings and the chance to cover serious miles without worrying about cold hands or frozen toes. But once the temperature really climbs, riding can become tiring surprisingly quickly.


I’ve always said—and personally find—that hot weather is much harder for long-distance riding than cold weather. When it is cold, you can usually add another layer, switch on heated grips or stop for a hot drink. In extreme heat, staying cool is far more difficult. You are sitting above a hot engine, surrounded by warm air and wearing protective clothing, often with very little relief until you stop.


Heat is therefore more than a comfort issue. Dehydration and heat exhaustion can leave you tired, dizzy, irritable or unable to concentrate properly. On a motorcycle, where good decisions and accurate control matter every second, that can become a real safety problem.

The answer is not to abandon your protective kit. It is to prepare properly, manage the day and recognise when it is time to stop.


Start the ride properly hydrated

Do not wait until you feel thirsty at a fuel stop before thinking about water. Hydration should begin before you leave home or the hotel.


Drink regularly before setting off and carry enough water for the journey. On longer days, a hydration pack can make water easy to reach, but only drink when it is safe to do so and never allow it to distract you from controlling the motorcycle or reading the road.


At stops, drink little and often rather than trying to catch up by consuming a large amount in one go. If you are sweating heavily for a prolonged period, a suitable electrolyte or rehydration drink may also help replace salts, but water should remain readily available.


Be cautious with alcohol the night before a long, hot ride and do not depend on coffee or high-caffeine energy drinks as your main source of fluid. Starting the day tired or dehydrated gives you less capacity to deal with the heat.


Wear protective kit designed for warm weather

When the sun is beating down, riding in a T-shirt or leaving your gloves behind can feel tempting. It is still a poor trade-off. Bare skin has virtually no protection from abrasion, impact, sunburn, insects or road debris.


Instead, choose motorcycle kit that combines protection with airflow. Look for:

  • A well-ventilated or mesh motorcycle jacket with suitable armour

  • Ventilated riding trousers rather than ordinary shorts or jeans

  • Lightweight, breathable motorcycle gloves

  • Protective boots that allow some ventilation

  • A helmet with effective, adjustable vents

  • Moisture-wicking base layers that move sweat away from the skin

  • Light colours where practical, as dark kit absorbs more heat in direct sunlight


Before buying summer kit, check its protective rating and make sure the armour stays correctly positioned. Clothing that is too loose may flow plenty of air but can allow protectors to move away from where they are needed.


Open all the vents before setting off—not when you are already hot—and check that luggage, waterproof layers or an airbag system are not unintentionally blocking them.


Remember that airflow is not the whole answer

Moving air can make a hot ride feel more manageable, but the effect disappears when traffic slows. Town centres, roadworks, border crossings and motorway queues can quickly become the hardest parts of the day. The heat from the motorcycle also becomes much more noticeable when you are stationary.


Plan routes that keep moving where possible and check for delays before you leave. Never filter, overtake or rush simply to escape the heat; if a queue is making you uncomfortably hot, stop somewhere safe and take a proper break.


Consider adding a cooling vest

For riders who regularly travel in high temperatures, a purpose-made cooling vest can be a worthwhile addition to summer kit. It is worn beneath the protective motorcycle jacket and helps remove or absorb body heat. It does not replace ventilation, water or rest, but it can make the conditions more manageable and reduce the temptation to remove protective clothing.


There are several types, and each has different strengths:

  • Traditional soak-activated evaporative vests are immersed in water and allowed to drain before use. They are generally simple and affordable, but may feel damp, add weight when wet and rely heavily on airflow and evaporation. They work best in dry conditions and may be much less effective in high humidity.

  • Dry evaporative vests hold water within a sealed or lined core so that the rider and base layer remain dry. One example is the INUTEQ Bodycool Smart-X with INUTEQ-DRY® technology. It is activated by adding approximately 500ml of tap water, distributing it through the vest and removing any excess. The manufacturer says the cooling can last from eight to 72 hours, depending on temperature, airflow and humidity. For touring, the ability to reactivate it with ordinary tap water—without needing a refrigerator—may be particularly useful.

  • Phase-change cooling vests use pre-cooled inserts or built-in phase-change material to absorb heat at a controlled temperature. They do not depend on evaporation in the same way, so they can work better in humid conditions or beneath clothing with limited airflow. The trade-offs are usually extra weight, a shorter cooling period and the need to recharge the inserts in a refrigerator, freezer or another sufficiently cool place, according to the manufacturer’s instructions.


A damp neck tube or purpose-made cooling towel can also provide some temporary relief, although anything worn around the neck must fit safely and must not restrict head movement, helmet fastening or visibility.


Whichever system you choose, try it on a shorter ride before relying on it for a full touring day. Check that the vest fits comfortably beneath your jacket without moving the armour, restricting your movement or interfering with an airbag garment. Follow the manufacturer’s activation, cleaning and storage instructions, and remember that evaporative products still need suitable airflow to work effectively.


Most importantly, treat a cooling vest as an extra layer of heat management—not permission to ride through dehydration, fatigue or symptoms of heat exhaustion.


Change your schedule, not just your clothing

On a touring day, one of the best ways to manage heat is to avoid doing the hardest riding during the hottest hours.


Consider an early start, a longer lunch break in the shade and a return to the road later in the afternoon. The NHS advises avoiding direct sun between 11am and 3pm during hot weather. That period may be a good time to refuel, eat, rest or visit somewhere indoors rather than forcing yourself through another two hours of exhausting riding.


An early departure can also mean cooler roads, lighter traffic and a much more enjoyable first half of the day. If the forecast is extreme, changing the route, reducing the planned mileage or postponing the ride is sensible risk management—not a failure.


Stop earlier and more often

In cooler weather, many riders plan breaks around fuel range. In hot weather, the rider may need a stop before the bike does.


Build extra time into the journey and take regular breaks somewhere shaded or air-conditioned. Remove your helmet and jacket once safely off the bike, drink, cool down and honestly assess how you feel before carrying on.


Watch the other riders in your group as well. Someone becoming unusually quiet, irritable, clumsy or confused may be struggling with the heat even if they insist they are fine. A good group ride allows the person who needs a break to say so without feeling that they are holding everyone up.


There is no prize for completing the planned route without stopping. Ten minutes spent cooling down is far better than continuing until fatigue begins to affect your observations, cornering or decision-making.


Eat for the conditions

Heavy meals can leave you feeling sluggish at the best of times. On a hot touring day, choose lighter food and smaller portions during riding hours. Fruit and other water-rich foods can be useful additions, but they do not replace drinking enough fluid.


Carry a simple snack in case the route changes or the planned café is closed. Heat, hunger and dehydration together are a poor combination when you still have miles to cover.


Protect yourself when you are off the bike

A lot of heat exposure happens during stops: standing beside the bike, walking around an attraction or sitting outside at a café in riding kit.


Use shade whenever you can. Apply suitable sunscreen to exposed skin, including the face and neck, and remember that a breeze can disguise how strong the sun is. Do not leave essential medication, electronics or pressurised items baking in direct sunlight inside luggage.


When parking, think about what the bike will be like when you return. A saddle left in direct sun can become extremely hot, and metal controls or accessories may also be uncomfortable to touch.


Know the warning signs of heat exhaustion

Do not try to ride through symptoms of heat illness. According to the NHS, signs of heat exhaustion can include:

  • Tiredness or weakness

  • Dizziness or headache

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Heavy sweating with pale or clammy skin

  • Muscle cramps

  • A high temperature

  • Strong thirst

  • Irritability


If you or another rider develops these symptoms, stop riding, move to a cool place, remove unnecessary clothing, drink water or a suitable rehydration drink and cool the skin. Stay with the affected person.


If they remain unwell after 30 minutes of cooling and fluids—or develop very hot skin without sweating, fast breathing, confusion, poor coordination, a seizure or loss of consciousness—treat it as a medical emergency and call 999. Follow the current NHS guidance on heat exhaustion and heatstroke.


Do not put someone back on a motorcycle simply because they say they can continue. Their judgement and coordination may already be affected.


Gordon’s hot-weather touring checklist

Before a long ride in high temperatures, I ask myself:

  • Have I started the day properly hydrated?

  • Is my protective kit suitable for the temperature and fully vented?

  • Would a cooling vest help, and is it activated or charged correctly?

  • Do I have water that is easy to reach at stops?

  • Can I avoid the hottest part of the day?

  • Where are the planned shaded or air-conditioned breaks?

  • Does the route include likely congestion or long periods at low speed?

  • Have I reduced the day’s mileage if the conditions demand it?

  • Does everyone in the group know they can call for an unscheduled stop?


The final question matters. A route plan should serve the riders; the riders should never become prisoners of the route plan.

Stay protected, stay flexible and stay honest

Hot-weather riding can be fantastic, but it needs a different approach. Wear the right protective kit, hydrate before and during the journey, plan around the temperature and take breaks before you feel exhausted.


Most importantly, be honest with yourself. If your concentration is slipping, your reactions feel slow or you are becoming unwell, stop. The road will still be there once you have cooled down—or on another day.
