Please read these Terms & Conditions before booking any motorcycle training with RIDE Motorcycle Training.

These terms are intended to make clear what you can expect from us and what we require from you as a rider. By booking training with us, you agree to these Terms & Conditions.

​

RIDE Motorcycle Training is a trading name of Rock and Road Training Ltd. Throughout these Terms & Conditions, “RIDE”, “we”, “us” and “our” refer to RIDE Motorcycle Training. “You” and “student” refer to the person booking or undertaking training.

 

Nothing in these Terms & Conditions affects your statutory rights as a consumer.

1. Training & DVSA Requirements

RIDE Motorcycle Training and its instructors provide motorcycle training, including Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), motorcycle licence training and pre-test training.

Training and testing will be delivered in accordance with the relevant requirements, regulations and guidance issued by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

DVSA rules and requirements can change from time to time. Where these Terms & Conditions refer to a DVSA requirement, the current DVSA requirement will apply.

RIDE cannot guarantee that a student will pass a DVSA test or complete a CBT within a particular number of training days.

Our instructors will assess each rider's ability and progress and may recommend additional training where they believe this is necessary for the rider to reach the required standard safely.

2. Licence & Documentation Requirements

You are responsible for ensuring that you hold the correct licence and entitlement for the training you have booked.

You must bring the required licence and identification documents with you when requested.

Depending on the training or test being undertaken, this may include:

• a valid UK driving licence with the appropriate motorcycle entitlement;

• your CBT certificate, where required;

• your motorcycle theory test pass certificate or reference number, where required;

• any documentation required by DVSA for a practical test;

• any other documents specifically requested by RIDE or DVSA.

If you have completed your CBT elsewhere, you must provide your valid CBT certificate before undertaking training where this is required.

If you do not have the required documentation or entitlement, we may be unable to provide the booked training or test.

Where a student is unable to undertake training or a test because they have not provided the required documentation, the booking may be treated as a cancellation and the applicable cancellation charges may apply.

3. Your Responsibilities Before Training

You are responsible for making sure that you are prepared for your training.

You should:

• have a reasonable understanding of the Highway Code appropriate to your level of training;

• arrive on time and ready to ride;

• bring any required personal riding equipment;

• inform us in advance of anything that may affect your ability to train safely;

• follow all reasonable instructions given by your instructor;

• behave safely and respectfully towards instructors, other students and members of the public.

Motorcycle training is progressive and students develop at different rates. If an instructor believes that additional training would be beneficial or necessary before progressing, we may recommend this.

4. CBT Training, Standards & Additional Training

A Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course is a training and assessment process designed to ensure that a rider has the knowledge, skills and ability to ride safely on the road.

Booking a CBT does not guarantee that a CBT certificate will be issued.

Our instructors will assess your progress throughout the day and provide instruction and guidance to help you reach the required standard.

Every rider develops at a different pace. The amount of training required can vary depending on previous riding experience, confidence, ability and how well the rider is able to apply the skills being taught.

Reaching the required standard

Before a CBT certificate can be issued, the rider must successfully complete all required elements of the CBT and demonstrate the standard required by the current DVSA CBT syllabus.

This includes demonstrating that the rider can ride safely and responsibly on the road and respond appropriately to normal traffic conditions.

Our instructors will make the final decision as to whether a rider has reached the required standard to complete the CBT.

If you do not reach the required standard

If a rider has not reached the required standard during their booked CBT, the instructor will explain the areas requiring further development and, where appropriate, recommend the most suitable next step.

This may include:

• additional instruction during the booked session, where time and circumstances allow;

• a further CBT course;

• a separate road-riding or skills-development session;

• additional training to develop confidence and experience before another CBT;

• gaining further independent riding experience before returning for further training.

The aim is to help riders progress safely rather than simply repeat CBT courses where further development is needed.

Additional CBT training

If a rider attends a booked CBT but does not reach the required standard, the original CBT booking remains chargeable. The booking is for a day's training and assessment and does not guarantee the issue of a CBT certificate.

A rider who does not complete the CBT to the required standard is therefore not entitled to a refund of the original CBT fee simply because a certificate has not been issued.

Any additional training or subsequent CBT booking will be charged separately at RIDE's current published rates.

Where we believe that another CBT immediately is unlikely to be the most appropriate next step, we may recommend an alternative training session or further riding experience first.

Booking another CBT does not guarantee that a CBT certificate will be issued. The rider must demonstrate the required standard during that course before a certificate can be completed.

 

5. Motorcycle Licence Training & Test Preparation

Motorcycle licence training is progressive and the length of training required will vary between riders.

Our recommended training programme is based on the rider's ability, experience and progress.

Where an instructor believes that a student is not yet at a safe or appropriate standard to progress to a practical test, we may recommend additional training before the test.

RIDE will not knowingly put a student forward for a practical test where, in our professional judgement, they are not sufficiently prepared to ride safely and meet the required test standard.

Any decision to recommend further training will be based on the student's riding ability, safety, competence and the current DVSA requirements.

Additional training required before a test is charged at RIDE's current published rates.

6. Module 1 & Module 2 Tests

Motorcycle licence testing consists of two practical modules:

• Module 1 – off-road manoeuvring

• Module 2 – on-road riding

Module 1 must be passed before Module 2 can be taken.

The current DVSA rules regarding test booking, waiting periods, test requirements and retests will apply.

If a student fails a practical test, any further training required will be charged at the applicable RIDE training rate and any new DVSA test fee will be payable.

Students are responsible for ensuring that they meet the DVSA requirements for their test, including holding a valid theory test pass where required and bringing the required documentation.

If a student books or attends a test without meeting the DVSA requirements, the test may be lost and any associated fees may be non-refundable.

Where a student chooses to book Module 1 and Module 2 close together, the student accepts that a Module 1 failure may affect their ability to take the Module 2 test and may result in the loss or rearrangement of the Module 2 appointment in accordance with DVSA's terms.

7. DVSA Test Cancellations

DVSA controls the availability and operation of practical tests.

If DVSA cancels or rearranges a test, RIDE will assist with rearranging the training and/or test where possible.

Any test fee will be dealt with in accordance with the DVSA's current cancellation and refund arrangements.

Where RIDE has incurred costs for training, vehicle provision, instructor time or escorting a student to a test, any applicable RIDE charges will be dealt with in accordance with these Terms & Conditions.

If a test is cancelled due to circumstances outside RIDE's control, we will make reasonable efforts to minimise any additional costs to the student.

8. Training Bookings, Payment & Cancellation

A booking is confirmed once the required deposit or full payment has been received.

The remaining balance, where applicable, must be paid before training commences.

When you book training with RIDE, we reserve an instructor, training place and, where applicable, a motorcycle and test appointment specifically for you.

If you need to cancel or rearrange training, please give us as much notice as possible.

More than 7 working days' notice

Where more than 7 full working days' notice is provided, we will normally offer the option to transfer the booking to another suitable date or, where applicable, provide a refund in accordance with the booking terms.

Less than 7 working days' notice

Cancellations or requests to rearrange made with less than 7 working days' notice may result in the deposit or booking fee being retained or a rebooking charge being applied.

This reflects the costs associated with reserving the instructor, training place, motorcycle and any associated test arrangements.

Failure to attend

If you do not attend your booked training without giving appropriate notice, the booking may be treated as a late cancellation and the full training fee may be payable.

Training that has started

Once training has commenced, the training fee remains payable even if the student chooses to withdraw before completing the booked training.

Where training has been provided but the student has not reached the required standard, the training remains chargeable. This includes CBT training where a CBT certificate cannot be issued.

Any unused training cannot automatically be transferred to another course.

RIDE cancellations

If RIDE needs to cancel or rearrange training, we will provide as much notice as reasonably possible.

Where we cancel a booking, we will offer an alternative suitable date or a refund for the affected booking, as appropriate.

Nothing in this section affects your statutory rights.

9. Online & Distance Bookings

Where a booking is made online, by telephone or otherwise at a distance, applicable consumer cancellation rights will apply.

Where you request that training begins within any applicable statutory cancellation period, you may be asked to expressly request this.

Where permitted by law, if a service has been fully provided following your express request for it to begin during the cancellation period, your statutory right to cancel may end.

Details of any applicable cancellation rights will be provided as part of the booking process.

10. Safety & Instructor Decisions

Safety is our priority.

Our instructors have the right to stop or suspend training where they believe that continuing would be unsafe.

This may include situations where:

• the student's riding presents a danger to themselves or others;

• the student is unable to safely control the motorcycle;

• the student is not following reasonable instructor instructions;

• the student's physical or mental condition makes continuing unsafe;

• the motorcycle or equipment is not safe to use;

• weather or road conditions make continuing unsafe.

Where training is stopped because of a safety concern relating to the student's ability or behaviour, the training already provided remains chargeable.

Where possible, we will discuss the situation with the student and advise on an appropriate next step.

11. Accidents & Injuries

Motorcycling carries inherent risks, including the possibility of falls, collisions and injury.

RIDE will take reasonable steps to provide training safely and professionally. Students are responsible for riding within their ability and following the instructions given by their instructor.

If an accident or injury occurs, training may be stopped and appropriate medical assistance will be sought where necessary.

Students should inform their instructor immediately of any injury or medical concern.

Nothing in these Terms & Conditions excludes or limits liability that cannot legally be excluded or limited, including liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence.

RIDE is not responsible for loss of earnings, travel costs or damage to personal belongings except where we are legally responsible for such loss or damage.

12. Fitness to Ride, Medical Conditions & Medication

You must tell us before training if you have any medical condition, injury, medication or other circumstance that you believe may affect your ability to ride safely.

You are responsible for ensuring that you meet any medical requirements applicable to your driving licence and DVLA requirements.

If an instructor reasonably believes that a student is not fit or safe to ride, training may be stopped or rearranged.

We may ask you to seek appropriate medical advice before continuing training where this is considered necessary for safety.

13. Alcohol & Drugs

You must not attend training or testing under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or any medication that makes you unsafe to ride.

If an instructor believes that a student is unfit to ride, training will not proceed.

Where a student is unable to train because they have attended under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the booking may be treated as a cancellation and the applicable cancellation charges may apply.

14. Eyesight Requirements

You must meet the eyesight requirements applicable to your licence and motorcycle test.

Where an eyesight check is required, you must be able to read a number plate from the distance specified by the current DVSA requirements.

The current DVSA motorcycle test guidance requires a number plate to be read from:

• 20 metres for a new-style number plate, or

• 20.5 metres for an old-style number plate.

If you require glasses or contact lenses to meet the eyesight requirement, you must wear them whenever required while riding.

If you cannot meet the required eyesight standard, training or testing cannot proceed.

15. Communication & Understanding Instructions

For safety reasons, students must be able to understand and follow their instructor's instructions, including instructions given over a radio system.

Where an instructor believes that a student cannot safely understand or follow instructions, training may be stopped or rearranged.

If you have any concerns about your ability to understand or communicate during training, please contact us before booking so that we can discuss whether reasonable adjustments or alternative arrangements may be possible.

16. Clothing & Safety Equipment

Students must wear appropriate motorcycle clothing and equipment.

RIDE can normally provide, subject to availability and suitable fit:

• helmet;

• motorcycle jacket;

• gloves;

• waterproofs;

• training vest;

• radio equipment; and

• other training equipment where appropriate.

Students must provide their own suitable motorcycle footwear. For practical tests, footwear must meet the requirements specified by DVSA.

For CBT and other training, students must wear suitable clothing and footwear appropriate for motorcycle riding.

If RIDE cannot provide suitable equipment in an appropriate size or the student does not have the required personal equipment, training may not be able to proceed.

Where a student arrives without required clothing or equipment and training cannot safely take place, the booking may be treated as a cancellation.

Students are responsible for looking after RIDE equipment while it is in their possession and must report any existing damage to an instructor before use.

17. Use of RIDE Motorcycles

RIDE motorcycles are provided for authorised training and testing purposes only.

Students must not:

• use a RIDE motorcycle without permission;

• allow another person to use the motorcycle;

• carry a passenger unless specifically authorised;

• use the motorcycle outside the agreed training or hire arrangements;

• deliberately misuse or abuse the motorcycle.

Students must follow all instructions given by RIDE staff regarding the use of our motorcycles.

Any unauthorised use may result in training being terminated and the student may be responsible for any resulting losses or damage.

18. Motorcycle Damage & Insurance

RIDE motorcycles used for training are insured for their intended training use, subject to the terms and conditions of our insurance policy.

Insurance does not provide personal accident cover for the student.

Our current insurance excess is £500, although this may change if our insurance arrangements change.

Where a student is responsible for damage to a RIDE motorcycle, the amount recoverable from the student will depend on the circumstances, the applicable insurance arrangements and any relevant excess waiver.

An insurance excess waiver may be available for an additional fee where offered by RIDE. Details and the current price will be provided at the time of booking.

The excess waiver does not automatically cover:

• deliberate or reckless damage;

• unauthorised use;

• loss of keys;

• damage to or loss of safety equipment;

• damage caused outside the agreed use of the motorcycle; or

• any other items specifically excluded from the waiver.

Where damage occurs, RIDE will assess the appropriate repair or replacement cost.

We will not require payment for damage that we are legally responsible for.

19. Motorcycle Breakdown or Mechanical Problems

Our motorcycles are regularly maintained and serviced.

If a motorcycle develops a mechanical problem during training, we will make reasonable efforts to provide a suitable replacement motorcycle or alternative training arrangement.

If a mechanical problem means that training or testing cannot continue, we will work with the student to rearrange the affected training or test where appropriate.

We will not normally be responsible for additional personal costs such as travel, accommodation or loss of earnings arising from a mechanical breakdown unless we are legally responsible for those costs.

20. Punctures & Other Roadside Problems

If a puncture or other mechanical problem occurs during training, training may be temporarily suspended until the motorcycle is safe and roadworthy.

Where possible, lost training time will be rearranged or added to another session.

If the problem occurs immediately before or during a practical test, we will work with the student to minimise any additional costs and rearrange the training or test where possible.

21. Students Using Their Own Motorcycle

If you use your own motorcycle for training, you are responsible for ensuring that it is legal, safe and suitable for the training being undertaken.

The motorcycle must have, where applicable:

• valid insurance covering its use for the training;

• valid vehicle tax;

• a valid MOT;

• appropriate L-plates where legally required;

• legal and suitable tyres;

• functioning lights, brakes and controls; and

• any other equipment required by law.

RIDE reserves the right to refuse to use a motorcycle that we reasonably believe is unsafe, unsuitable or not legally compliant.

If your motorcycle cannot be used and a RIDE motorcycle is available, we may be able to provide one at the applicable additional charge.

If no suitable RIDE motorcycle is available and the training cannot proceed, the cancellation terms may apply.

22. Unsupervised Motorcycle Hire

Where RIDE agrees to hire a motorcycle to a student for unsupervised use, separate hire conditions may apply.

The insurance cover applicable to unsupervised hire will be explained before the hire takes place.

The student is responsible for complying with all conditions of the hire and insurance arrangements.

Any damage, loss, insurance excess or other charge arising from the hire will be dealt with in accordance with the applicable hire agreement and insurance arrangements.

23. Test Eligibility & Student Responsibility

Students are responsible for ensuring that they are eligible to take their chosen test.

This includes ensuring that they:

• hold the correct licence entitlement;

• have passed the required motorcycle theory test;

• meet any applicable age and licence requirements;

• hold any required certificates;

• have provided the correct information to RIDE and DVSA;

• bring the required documentation to the test.

If a student books a test without meeting the requirements, the test may be lost and the associated fees may not be recoverable.

RIDE will provide reasonable guidance, but the ultimate responsibility for ensuring that you are legally entitled to take a test rests with you.

24. Dangerous or Inappropriate Riding

RIDE has a responsibility to protect students, instructors and members of the public.

Training may be stopped if a student:

• rides dangerously;

• deliberately ignores instructor instructions;

• deliberately misuses a motorcycle;

• behaves recklessly;

• puts another person at unnecessary risk; or

• otherwise behaves in a way that makes continuing training unsafe.

Where training is stopped for these reasons, the training already provided remains chargeable.

We may refuse to provide further training where we reasonably believe that doing so would create a safety risk.

25. Behaviour & Respect

We expect all students to treat RIDE staff, instructors, other students, DVSA staff and members of the public with respect.

Abusive, threatening, discriminatory or seriously disruptive behaviour will not be tolerated.

Where behaviour creates a safety concern or prevents training from continuing, the student may be asked to leave and training may be terminated.

Where appropriate, serious incidents may be reported to the relevant authorities.

Any unused training may be lost where termination is due to serious misconduct.

26. Personal Belongings

Students are responsible for their own personal belongings while attending RIDE.

Where available, we may offer a secure place for valuables to be stored during training, but students should avoid bringing unnecessary valuables with them.

Nothing in these Terms & Conditions excludes liability where RIDE is legally responsible for loss or damage.

27. Gift Vouchers

RIDE gift vouchers are subject to the terms provided with the voucher at the time of purchase.

The voucher will state its expiry date and what it can be used towards.

Gift vouchers cannot be exchanged for cash unless required by law.

If the price of the training or service has increased since the voucher was purchased, the difference may be payable.

Where a voucher is used to book a specific training date, the normal cancellation and rebooking terms apply to that booking.

The purchaser is responsible for ensuring that the recipient meets the relevant licence, age, health, clothing and other requirements before booking training.

28. Prices & Promotions

Current training prices are published by RIDE and may change from time to time.

The price applicable to a confirmed booking will be the price agreed at the time of booking, subject to any clearly stated conditions.

Promotional offers may have additional terms and conditions, which will be provided with the offer.

Where a deposit has not been paid and a price has not been confirmed, RIDE reserves the right to change the advertised price.

29. Changes to These Terms & Conditions

We may update these Terms & Conditions from time to time to reflect changes in our services, DVSA requirements, legislation or how RIDE operates.

The version of the Terms & Conditions applicable to your booking will normally be the version in force when the booking is made.

Where a change is required by law, regulation or DVSA requirements, the updated requirement may apply to existing bookings where necessary.

The current version will be published on the RIDE website.

30. Data Protection & Privacy

RIDE processes personal information in accordance with applicable data protection legislation, including the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018.

We may collect and use personal information where necessary to:

• provide training and testing services;

• process bookings and payments;

• communicate with students;

• arrange DVSA tests;

• meet legal or regulatory requirements;

• maintain appropriate training records;

• protect our legitimate business interests; and

• deal with enquiries, complaints or incidents.

Information may be shared with third parties where this is necessary to provide the service, meet legal or regulatory requirements or otherwise permitted by law.

31. Consumer Rights

RIDE aims to provide all training services with reasonable care and skill.

Nothing in these Terms & Conditions is intended to exclude or restrict any legal rights you have as a consumer.

Where a term of these Terms & Conditions conflicts with a mandatory legal right, the legal right will apply.

32. Complaints

If you have a concern about your training or the service provided by RIDE, please contact us as soon as possible so that we have an opportunity to investigate and resolve the matter.

We will aim to deal with complaints fairly and reasonably.

RIDE Motorcycle Training reserves the right to refuse or discontinue training where we reasonably believe that continuing would be unsafe or otherwise inappropriate.
